  3. MagCat is a magazine article cataloging program and is being distributed
  4. as shareware.  MagCat provides a method of cataloging all of the magazine
  5. articles, books, files, and other pieces of information lying about in a
  6. form that allows fast searching for information based on keywords.
  7.  
  8. Information kept about articles includes the article name, its location,
  9. a short description about the article, and a list of keywords used to
  10. search for the article.  A database is created to contain all of the
  11. information about the articles.  This database is accessed via three windows.
  12. The Article window displays all of the articles in the database.  It can
  13. display the locations, keywords, and descriptions of each article and allows
  14. searching.  The Location window displays all of the unique locations where
  15. articles are stored along with how many articles are stored in each location.
  16. The Keyword window displays all of the keywords and the number of times each
  17. keyword has been used.  Multiple databases may be open at the same time to
  18. allow easy viewing of different databases.  Articles may be imported and
  19. exported from other databases.  The entire database or just the results of
  20. a search may be printed.

  22. Searches are performed using the Article window.  Articles may be searched
  23. by locations and keywords.  All articles that match the search criteria are
  24. displayed in the article window.  Their locations and descriptions may be
  25. displayed to help determine which articles are the most appropriate.

  28. Requirements

  30. MagCat is a Microsoft Windows application and requires Windows 3.0 or above.
  31. It requires Windows to be run in either Standard or Enhanced mode.  The
  32. program, help file, and DLL (magcat.exe, magcat.hlp, and magcatdb.dll) must
  33. be in the same directory.  The data files may be anywhere (including the same
  34. directory).  The .ini file may be in either the Windows directory or the same
  35. directory as the executables.  If the .INI file does not exist, it will be
  36. created in the Windows directory.

  41. You should have the following files.

  43.         magcat.exe      - the main application
  44.         magcat.hlp      - help data
  45.         magcatdb.dll    - helper functions
  46.         readme.txt      - this file
  47.         history.txt     - MagCat change history
  48.         install.exe     - installs the application to a hard disk
  49.         magcat.inf      - information file used during installation
  50.         sample.dat      - sample database to get a feel for using MagCat

  52. Installation

  54. Run the Install program from Windows.  It will copy the software from the
  55. distribution diskette into the directory you specify and create the
  56. program manager group.  If you downloaded this software from a BBS, place
  57. all of the files in the same directory and run the Install program.  It
  58. will install the files from this directory into the new directory you
  59. specify.

  61. If this program is run from a network, a magcat.ini file should be
  62. placed in the Windows directory of each PC that will run the application,
  63. and the magcat.ini file in the MagCat installation directory should be
  64. deleted.  This allows each user the ability to save their own individual
  65. settings.

  70. A complete help system is included. It describes each command and describes
  71. how to perform common operations.  Help can be accessed in the following
  72. ways:
  73.  
  74.    - Use the Help menu to select help on various topics
  75.    - Most dialog boxes contain a Help button
  76.    - Pressing Shift-F1 changes the cursor to a Help pointer. The next
  77.      object that you click on will display help on that object.

  79. A printed and bound manual is included in the registration fee.

  84. This program is being distributed as shareware.  If you make use of this
  85. software you are expected to pay a registration fee of $30.00.

  87. Registration entitles you to a disk with the next version of the software,
  88. a registration number, a printed manual, and notice of updates to the software.
  89. Future versions of this software are available to registered users at a
